It’s that time of year when the Joulen team comes together to celebrate our achievements over the past 12 months.
For us, this means one thing: the “Joulies” award ceremony! These awards celebrate our employees who bring our core values of innovation, collaboration, and optimisation, highlighting the incredible ways our team embodies these principles every day.
We’re proud to look back on a year of significant progress, where we’ve made great strides in rolling out our innovative clean energy solutions and laid the groundwork for even more successes ahead.
We kicked off the year by securing a GB Capacity Market contract for 2024/25! Our PARIS platform will fulfill this contract while optimising to minimise grid costs through Smart Charging and maximising revenue in Ancillary Services, the Balancing Mechanism, and wholesale electricity markets.
We attended Energy Technology Live in March, which showcased progress, innovations, and challenges in achieving net zero. From smart meter rollouts to optimising self-generation and storage, inspiring case studies showed more customer-centric experiences driving lasting behavior change.
We were thrilled to return to Utility Week Live in May. Connecting with industry friends and innovators, we explored powerful ideas, such as customer-focused transitions and locational pricing’s potential to transform GB’s transmission system.
We attended Electron’s Flex at Scale event in June, which brought the energy industry together to explore the future of flexibility. Flexibility is an integral pillar in delivering the UK’s Net Zero ambitions, helping to optimise existing network infrastructure and accelerate the achievement of our clean energy goals.
In June, we were excited to unveil our rebrand as Joulen! Inspired by the term “joule” to signify our expertise and passion in the energy sector, the rebrand reflects the evolution of our business with a growing team and success expanding into new markets.
We proudly published our Better Battery Strategy in September. Our flagship report of the year outlines the transformative power of optimised battery storage to accelerate our transition to 100% clean electricity, and provides actionable steps the government can take to democratise and decarbonise our electricity system so the benefits are shared by all.
It was fantastic to attend the LCP Data Summit in October, which highlighted crucial takeaways to supercharge the clean transition: behind-the-meter flexibility complements grid-scale projects, engaging consumers requires similar incentives to those for grid investors, and collaboration is key!
We also secured our first major export deal in October: a £4 million contract with leading German energy company SonneNext. We will provide our AI platform PARIS tailored to offer new innovative energy services to their customers — we hope this is the first of many ventures expanding our smart energy solutions across Europe and beyond.
We were thrilled to attend the National Energy System Operator parliamentary launch in November. It was inspiring to connect with industry peers who are collectively driving the journey to net zero. The NESO team’s work is paving the way for a transformative energy future as we move closer to the Net Zero Energy 2030 vision.
Our Volunteer Day celebrates collaboration at Joulen, uniting our team to create positive change. Our team swapped desks for scenic views in Northern Ireland and the U.S., helping with environmental efforts and volunteering at local charities, including the National Trust and Trinity River Trash Bash.
We have continued to grow our team, reach, and impact, welcoming many new members to the Joulen team this year! We are now over 30 energy and data experts, working together to optimise renewable generation with storage solutions through PARIS for clients in Ireland, the UK, Germany, and beyond.
As we expand our smart energy solutions to households and businesses worldwide, we’re excited to welcome more trailblazers to the Joulen team as we work collaboratively toward a 100% clean energy future.
