Smart Local Energy System
Smart Local Energy Systems (SLES) offer a transformative model to accelerate the adoption of low-carbon technologies at the local level. SLES connect local smart devices such as solar photovoltaics (PV) and battery storage with centralised data analysis to enhance flexibility, efficiency, and resilience in local systems. By optimising the value of renewable investments, these smart networks deliver substantial benefits for the environment, communities, and industries alike.
Powering Smart Local Energy Systems with New Clean Technologies

SLES connect local smart devices such as solar photovoltaics (PV) and battery storage with centralised data analysis to enhance flexibility, efficiency, and resilience in local systems. By optimising the value of renewable investments, these smart networks deliver substantial benefits for the environment, communities, and industries alike.
At Joulen, our AI-driven software platform, PARIS, optimises the generation, distribution, and consumption of energy within the SLES network. This market-leading software maximises the value of every unit of energy, embedding efficiencies and cost savings in every step.
Ushering in The Future of Smart Community Energy
Smart Local Energy Systems offer a decentralised, democratised, and decarbonised energy model that has a unique role in the green transition. By harnessing local resources and optimising systems locally, these networks meet communities’ energy needs more sustainably, minimising waste and maximising the use of renewables.
SLES can operate independently or alongside the national grid, ensuring a reliable energy supply even during grid disruptions. This localised control over energy resources generates numerous economic, environmental and social benefits, empowering communities to participate in energy markets and lower their energy bills for good.
Moreover, SLES technology is available and ready for immediate deployment. This proven, scaleable model is poised to accelerate the future of secure, low-carbon, and cost-effective local energy systems.
SLES Opportunities Abound
SLES offer a range of benefits for clean technology industries and the new green economy. These advanced systems require a range of clean technologies, such as solar panels, wind turbines, energy storage solutions, and smart charging — creating a steady demand. Aligning with the SLES market positions supplying companies as key players in the growing clean energy sector, not only as suppliers but as integral contributors to the future of sustainable energy.
Clean technology industries involved in SLES can capitalise on policy incentives, subsidies, and growing market demand. The SLES market also offers opportunities to improve supply chain coordination, resulting in a more efficient and sustainable production process.
The collaborative nature of SLES can also strengthen partnerships with other stakeholders, such as energy providers, local governments, and technology firms, leading to new opportunities and revenue streams. Collectively, these benefits offer a wide range of value-creating competitive advantages in cost savings, operational resilience, and market opportunities for those involved.
Optimising SLES Benefits with PARIS
At Joulen, we designed our AI system PARIS to maximise the efficiency of renewable generation and battery storage solutions for SLES. PARIS has been developed using state-of-the-art data analytics software, which specialises in forecasting the usage and generation of energy in real-time to determine and maximise the value it can bring.
PARIS employs the same advanced technology found in financial trading software, enabling smart decisions on when to store, use, and release energy. This capability enhances both energy and cost efficiency, offering up to 20% savings on customer energy costs. PARIS is scalable and generates substantial revenue growth with high margins. Joulen will continue to invest heavily in PARIS to drive growth and maintain high-quality offerings, with the scope of expanding our services to international markets.
Project Girona: Showcasing SLES Success
Joulen’s Project Girona set out to bring clean, lower-cost energy and energy flexibility as a service to 60 properties in Coleraine, Northern Ireland. The results showcased the transformative potential of SLES to reduce carbon emissions, optimise energy efficiency, and create cost savings community-wide.
Launched in 2020 and completed the following year, the project began with a comprehensive assessment of each participating property to determine specific energy needs ahead of the installation and integration of solar PV and sonnenBatterie10 (SB10) storage. Our advanced PARIS platform optimised Project Girona’s energy usage by determining the best times to store, use, or export energy.
The benefits were substantial. Participants reported energy cost savings of up to 70% during peak times alongside significant carbon emission reductions. With excess energy exported back to the grid, the system also contributed valuable grid stability services, validating its beneficial role within the wider energy services network.
Moreover, an app offered participants real-time monitoring of their energy usage and savings for a heightened customer experience. These valuable data insights demonstrated the effectiveness of the smart technologies while fostering customer engagement and empowerment.
“I’m seeing savings of up to 70% during peak times!”
